Art: Coping With Trauma

Image
For this blog post I wanted to do something that would get art educators inspired and share why I have the teacher philosophy that I have. Below is a link to my visualization project! I decided to use adobe express. I use this app with my students all the time for their graphic design projects! You can access and see the beauty that is this project:  Art Education- Student Trauma.           Hello everyone! Before I dive deep, I wanted to explain why I chose the topic I did. So many students go through situations in life that none of us want for them. Within my student demographic, these kids have been through so much and sometimes school is the only safe space for them. As an art educator I thrive on making my classroom and lessons something that students can use to cope with these hard times. I have such a passion for making a safe space for students while in school. This world has so much negativity in it right now, my hope is tha...

Text Complexity with Graphic Design!

Image
Analyzing text complexity: Graphic Design Within my research I wanted to find texts that would inspire, motivate, and help students dive into the world of Graphic Design. I wanted to target the range of high school students within this topic because this would be something I teach my older students. This would be a class they would take as an elective, and we could dive deep into the career of Graphic Design. The texts I am introducing you to today, tie along of motivating students and answering this big idea of: How can I find my voice as a graphic designer and make a successful career? Drum roll please... My Inquiry Blog Topic!

Image
Graphic Design!     This topic is where I can shine as a teacher for my students! I think it is so important to be able to bring this into my classroom for my students because of the many opportunities this topic has out in the world. They always seem to talk about the next Nike or Jordan's their going to see or make one day. That's when a light bulb went DING. What if I can bring this passion of theirs and combine it with mine? They not only become more motivated, but they see a future for themselves that does not involve "money" or "girls"... as I hear passing in the halls. I mean this does involve good money if they look at it. Plus, in this day-in-age we are becoming more and more tech.      When I did college the first time around, I obtained my degree in Graphic Design. Ideally, I wanted to be an independent graphic designer where people would hire me to make logos, posters, billboards, etc. There are so many career opportunities students don't ...

I introduce to you myself! Rebecca Stemwell, currently a k-12 Art Teacher with MPS. I remember watching my dad paint and I was so amazed at how this paste like "thing" could make such beautiful pictures. That is truly when I fell in love with art. Art was always a way for me to be able to express myself emotionally. I have always worked with kids my whole life whether it was  daycare  (currently I work here in the summer), camps, or even helping in my church. I knew once I got to college, I wanted to use my passion for art to help kids.  My professional goals for the future include so many ideas. One big goal of mine as an art educator is to be able to have my students use art to express their emotions and find some sort of escape to their troubles. So many of my students have had a lot of tragedy in their life at such a young age. I want them to be able to come to school and use my art room as a safe space for them to express themselves. One other goal is to create ...
